Three Ways To Die

What happens when your dreams become a killer’s playground?

In the murky recesses of someone else’s mind, Missy Melendez sees a young woman being strangled to death. The room is dark and indistinguishable, and the only identifiable sounds are the killer’s heavy breathing and the woman’s screams; neither of which helps Missy pinpoint the location of the homicide. Missy is the only witness to the crime; however, she never glimpses the murderer’s face because she can only see through his eyes.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable.

Two Faced

The mirror anxiously beckoned the man. He took the few steps required to meet his mummified reflection and grinned beneath the dressing. He was mere seconds away from the big reveal; his anticipation palpable.

The solitary light in the darkened room illuminated the white bandages, making the man appear almost ethereal. He inhaled deeply, relishing his final moments of ambiguity, before conclusively nodding his consent.

Robert stood behind the shorter man and slowly unwrapped his face. His smile widened as each layer of the person’s image was exposed. Other than the swelling, Robert’s latest creation was perfect. He’d successfully masked another monster.

His pride was blatant and filled the room with the stench of his own self-worth. “Are you pleased?” Robert inquired smugly.
Mickey glanced at himself in the glass. “Yes. I’m a totally different man.”

“Good. All you have to do is follow my instructions to the letter regarding your after care, and no one will ever recognize you. You can revisit your life as a criminal.”

“How do you know I won’t become a changed man? Perhaps I want to go straight – get married and have some kids.”

Robert shook his head. “Are you trying to convince me or yourself? Men like you don’t change, Mickey. Once a felon, always a felon. Now, I just need the rest of my money and our business here is done.”

Mickey’s tone was resolute. “I have what we agreed to which is $25,000.”

“What about the additional cash we discussed? I gave you a brand new face and identity. That should be priceless to a man like you.”

“I’m not going to pay you extortion money, Melendez. You should know better than to try and blackmail a man like me. I no longer need your services therefore it would be just as easy to kill you.”

The scalpel shined brightly as Robert lifted his right hand and ran the blade from one end of the man’s throat to the other. Blood spattered the mirror and trickled down Robert’s face. Mickey’s hand promptly turned crimson as he grabbed his neck; gasping for breath. Once Mickey fell to the floor, Robert kneeled down and used the man’s clothing to wipe the blood from his face and clean his scalpel. He then reached into his pocket, retrieved his phone, and set it in camera mode. He captured several close-up shots of his handiwork and Mickey’s nearly severed head.

Robert whispered in Mickey’s ear as the man took his last few breaths. “No need for my facial masterpiece to go to waste. I can place these pictures in my portfolio as an example of my precision with a knife. It will help attract more of your associates but also serve as a warning for anyone who decides to defy me like you did.”
Robert straightened and seized a can from the nearby table. He poured the content on the floor, dousing Mickey. The smell of gasoline permeated his nostrils as he lit a match and tossed it on his corpse.

“See you in hell, Mickey.”
